Description

Collelungo (the Long Hill) lies in its own private estate covering 200 acres of prime Tuscan countryside midway between Florence and Siena at the heart of the Chianti Classico grape-growing region.  It originated as a medieval casa da signore, or nobleman's house, and developed as a wine farm from the 14th century onwards, clinging to the contours from which it derives its name. Most of it is densely wooded, at a median altitude of 1,600ft. With all the major cultural and artistic centres on its doorstep, Collelungo is the ideal base for exploring the Chianti hills and Tuscany's famous attractions.

As well as the beautiful picture-book countryside, Siena can be reached in 30 minutes, Florence and San Gimignano 45 minutes, Arezzo 1 hour, and Volterra, Perugia, or Assisi 80 minutes. The pretty village of Castellina in Chianti, with a good choice of shops and restaurants, is a half-hour walk away (5 minutes by car). Unusually for the area, all of the domain is surrounded by woods; and because it is well off the public highway with no roads on its perimeter peace and silence are guaranteed. This seclusion means it is a sanctuary for flora and fauna.

Visitors have identified 36 species each of butterflies and birds as well as seven different types of wild orchid. The estate's uncultivated area is covered mainly with holm oaks, cypresses and pines while the vineyards are dotted with cherry, pear, apple, peach, walnut, olive and fig trees as well as native ginestra (broom), juniper bushes, dog roses, prickly pears and bramble berries typical of Chianti. There are romantic woodland walks and tranquil picnic spots to discover in a landscape that is itself truly "classico", like our wines.

All the apartments, all of which are named for the contradas (neighbourhoods) which compete in Siena's famed annual horse race, the Palio, accommodate two or four persons, have lovely views over the vines.

They have maintained their rustic character and the furniture combines comfort and elegance, many items being made for us by local craftsmen. Each apartment has its own sitting-out area, with a table and garden chairs. Most have either an open fireplace or stove, and all have central heating for cooler months.

The galley kitchen includes fridge, full-size cooker with four burners and oven, and comes fully equipped. All have comfortable, upholstered armchairs or sofas in the lounge, a dining table and dining chairs.
