The wonderfully
situated Hotel Florence, run by the Ketzlar
family for the past 150 years, sits across the
main road running through Bellagio, facing Lake
Como with a stately countenance. The
oldest part of the building dates to the late
18th century, but the newer wings are well
integrated into the earlier and the entire
structure presents a harmonious, well-run,
elegant and friendly whole.
Rooms are
comfortable, well appointed, and moderately
priced, some with balconies, and one or two with
french doors that swing open onto gorgeous
little terraces. Book well in advance if
you want one. These rooms have hosted
numerous luminaries over the decades, including
such noteworthies as
Mark Twain, Puccini, Toscanini, Nino Rota,when
he was an infant prodigy, Kurt Weill, and dozens
of others.
The hotel boasts a gourmet restaurant, but
during clement weather you can have a meal on
the wisteria covered terrace that sits by the
side of the lake. When the weather is
chillier, guests can take refuge in the lounge
just off the main reception area and warm up
beside a crackling fire.
If you really want to kick back and relax, you
can take advantage of the hotels spa where you
can enjoy a steam bath, massage, and other spa
treatments that will reduce you to a pleasant
state of indifference and leave you prepared for
the many delights of Lake Como.
