Florence is a truly
engaging city - full
of surprises and
delights that will
satisfy all your
senses and seep into
the far reaches of
your imagination and
your intellect.
It is the birthplace
of the Italian
Renaissance, of
course, but
importantly, that
legacy has given its
citizens the deep
pride it takes to
carry that legacy
into modern times.
Florence
scintillates and
vibrates - its
piazzas, galleries,
restaurants and
shops are among the
best in the world.
So Florence is a
marvellous place to
spend a few
enchanting days - a
gift to your own
soul and self. |

Duomo dome, Florence |
Day 1 - The
hotel we will book
for you is very
close to the heart
of Florence - and an
easy stroll from
which to embark on
your daily tours and
excursions.
Today, you are on
your own. Once you
check check into the
hotel you can spend
as much time as you
want getting rested
and freshened up for
what lies outside
the doors.
Once you are ready -
just venture into
the streets -
perhaps with guide
book in hand - and
start exploring the
city. Soak it
up! |
|
|
|
|
Day 2 - After
you enjoy your
breakfast at the
hotel, you will join
your first tour - a
walking tour of the
city that will
include a stop for
lunch at a wonderful
Florentine
restaurant.
During the tour you
will visit the Duomo
- the Cathedral of
Florence - and see
art works by many
Renaissance masters.
The doors of the
Duomo are by
Ghilberti; the dome
by the genius
Brunellschi, statues
carved by
Michelangelo - and
other wonders by
other masters.
Once the tour is
over, you may want
to return to your
hotel to put your
feet up - or just
continue ambling
through the medieval
streets of Florence
on your own.
It's entirely up to
you! |

Giotto - painting of angel |
Day 3 - You
cannot visit
Florence without
spending time at its
two major art
galleries - the
Uffizi and the
Accademia. To today
you will visit both
- and once again
enjoy a Tuscan lunch
in a local
restaurant.
The Uffizi is the
home to hundreds
(and hundreds) of
incredible works of
art dating back to
pre-Renaissance
times, but
encompassing the
Renaissance itself
and later epochs
including Mannerist,
neo Classical and
even modern works.
The Accademia is the
home of
Michelangelo's
statue of David and
many and varied
other works of
genius. You
will stand in awe of
the
David...wondering
how this figure
emerged so
brilliantly from
marble block it was
once locked inside
of.
After you return to
your hotel to
freshen up, we have
arranged a special
treat for you - a
private wine tasting
at the Enoteca
Pontevecchio.
Signor and Signora
Sasa, the owners,
will pour some of
the best wines
Tuscany has to offer
- whites, reds and
roses. A
perfect way to spend
an hour before
venturing out for
dinner (and perhaps
a little dancing?). |

|
Day 4 - You
have already seen
most of the great
things Florence has
to offer, so today
we are venturing
beyond the city to
Siena and San
Gimignano.
Siena, south of
Florence, has one of
the finest medieval
piazzas in all of
Europe - the Campo
di Fiori - scene of
the Palio, a
spectacular and very
dangerous horse race
that pits teams from
the various contrada
(neighbourhoods) of
Siena against one
another. Above
the campo looms the
city hall and its
impressive bell
tower. Not far
you will find one of
the duomo - one of
the best examples of
gothic architecture
in Italy.
You will enjoy lunch
at leisure in Siena,
and afterwards,
start on the short
journey to another
of Tuscany's
extraordinary
cities, San
Gimignano, city of
the towers.
Sitting high on hill
overlooking
evocative
landscapes, the city
is home of 14
medieval sky
scrapers, built by
powerful merchants
and nobles for
security, but also
as an exclamaition
point to their
wealth and status.
The public squares
and winding streets
of San Gimignano,
full of tidy shops
and wonderful cafes
will keep you
enthralled for
hours.
You will return to
Florence in time for
dinner - and for a
relaxed evening
under Tuscan stars. |

Florence at night
by Jesse Andrews |
Day 5 - We
haven't programmed
any activities
today. After
breakfast you might
want to spend a few
more hours in
Florence, or you
might want to embark
on the next leg of
your journey.
Bologna, Parma,
Modena, Milan and
the Lake District
lie to the north;
Verona, Padua and
Venice to the north
and east, Umbria and
it's fabulous
capital city Perugia
are to the south and
a bit east, Rome
south and west.
Or, perhaps you'd
like to go due west
to Lucca, Pisa, the
beaches of Tuscany,
or even the
incredible villages
and coast of the
Cinque Terre.
Where ever you might
like to go next, our
Italy travel experts
can give you the
best travel advice
available. |
