Vernazza, like all of the Cinque
Terre towns is visually stunning.
It offers one of the best
equiped and largest ports of all
five towns.
Here, pink slate-roofed houses
and picturesque squres contrast
with the remains of a medieval
fort and castel, which was
struck by lighting in 1896 and
subsequently destroyed.
The castle (like the rest of the
town) has been restored and
carefully maintained. The
colourful buildings, impressive
churches and impressive views,
make Vernazza a "must see" on
the Cinque Terre route.
The streets and squares in
Vernazza (particularly during
the summer months) are lively
and tourist ridden. A
small beach at the front of the
town and the surrounding rocks
are the town's only area for
swimming and are often crammed
full of people.

Directions |
Get to Vernazza by
trail, train or
ferry. Be
prepared however,
that walking to
Vernazza from
Monterosso is one of
the most difficult
trails in the Cinque
Terre national park
and may not be
suitable for people
with respiratory or
foot problems as the
trail is long and
steep. |
