Many people visiting Riomaggiore
get the sense that this village
is less isolated than the other
four towns in the Cinque Terre,
largely because this town is
comparatively convenient to La
Spezia; you can arrive here by
car following the sings from La
Spezia's port.
However, the sense that this
town is younger than it's other
four siblings may be relatively
accurate based on history
reports, which indicate that it
was founded towards the end of
the twelth century, following
the migration towards the coast
of the inhabitants of Monte
Verugora and Montenero.
Here, you will find the same
sorts of flowery little squares
that bedeck the town's four
siblings, interspersed with
modern stucco house.
At the height of the town, up a
steep walk, a typical liguarian
gothic church, offers impressive
external and internal decoration.
Take note that "Lovers Lane"
connects Riomaggiore and
Manarola - one of the shortest
Cinque Terre walks. The
path begins at the railway
station in the middle of the
town. |
